The mandolin back laid on a shelf for 40+ years until this year, when I rediscovered it with fish in mind. Back then I was making Fiddles, and thought I'd try my hand at a Mandolin. It never materialized and now has purpose as an exceptionally figured fish. With its baby fish.
Look closely at the gill of the baby fish and you will see what was to be the prominent scroll always found on an F Style mandolin. I don't like wasting beautiful woods so the Baby, an after thought worked out great. The baby does not know it is an afterthought and I know its Mother will never tell.
The mount is special as it is from a scrap of an American Black walnut slab that made a 11' long live edge table. Metal rods painted to appear like hammered metal hold the two fish up.
Top of fin is 23", Momma fish is 16" long. The body is cut from 3/4" stock.
The base is 12-5/8" X 3-1/4"
This is an exceptional piece of art that I am very proud of. I only price my fish like this when I am very proud of them. This price reflects more of a retail price where most of my fish are marked at a basic wholesale price because there is no middleman. Simply materials and time. She will now reside in my home until someone is willing to pay $800.
