Take a closer look.
What you’re seeing here is a single example — a fish shaped from wood that was once overlooked, weathered, and left behind. It began as something discarded — a fallen limb, a rough board, a forgotten scrap — and has been given new life, not by hiding its past, but by revealing it.
Over time, pieces like this have found their way into the hands of people as quiet reminders or symbols — of perseverance, renewal, service, and the kind of lives that don’t seek attention, yet leave a lasting mark.
This space serves more than one purpose. It’s a place to learn, to reflect, and for some, a place to carry the idea forward — whether by making, sharing, or simply recognizing the value in what might otherwise be passed by.
If something here speaks to you, I invite you to explore further.
Every fish is a found specimen located in Forests, Firewood piles, alongside Roads, Rivers, Streams, Ponds and Lumber mill waste......anywhere wood can be. The list is extensive! I have fish found on the beaches of Oregon and Washington State, the Bad Lands of South Dakota and Mesquite fish from not far from the Mexican border in South Texas.
If not found wood, I make fish from highly figured beautiful exotic woods purchased from numerous sources.

This is a rewarding part of Fishing in Trees. I spend a lot of time searching and hiking through wooded areas for just that perfect fish. Keep in mind almost every stick, log, limb, or exposed root ball will yield a fish. Cool part is they never try to swim away. My fishing pole is a small handsaw, battery powered chainsaw or several sizes of chainsaws.
I may rough the body out to lessen the weight or for smaller fish, just to bring it home. No worries of bites or dorsal fins piercing me.

Each fish is one of a kind. Duplicating a fish from wood found in nature would be impossible. Every log limb or board will have different grain patterns and subtle differences in color.
Each fish is meticulously made starting with a chainsaw or if small enough a bandsaw. After that, grinders, sanders, planers, dremels and a whole lot of specialty tools are used. Almost every fish gets attention with old time wood carving chisels and mallet that I have used for almost 50 years.
